    Improve your
    View-Master Stereo Projection Experience with
    NEW Polarizing Filters
    for the Stereomatic 500
It is relatively easy to replace the polarizing
filters in your View Master Stereomatic 500 Stereo Projector.  Simply
remove the top cover (one thumb screws at the bottom) and then unscrew two
large screws that hold the reel advance mechanism.  The polarizing
filters are part of this assembly as seen  in the picture.
One question in many people’s mind is “how
do I know if I need new filters or not?”  All plastic polarizing
filters deteriorate through time and under the intense heat of the light
bulbs. If you notice “ghosting” then it is possible that you need
new filters (note: ghosting can be caused by other factors like  the
screen or the photographic emulsion of the film – ghosting means that the left
eye sees part of the right image and the right eye sees part of the right
image, i.e. the polarization is not good).
Here is a simple test anyone can do to test
polarizing filters.  Cross the filter with a pair of viewing polarizing
glasses until it gets as dark as possible and look at a bright light source,
such as a panel of fluorescent lights.  If the picture is overall dark
(deep blue, as in the left picture above) then the filters are good.  If
the picture is light then the filters are no good.  Notice that in the
picture on the right, polarization is reduced in the area heated by the light,
vs. the one covered by the metal holder.  I have done this test above for
the polarizers of the TDC projector but the idea is the same for any
    polarizing material (including viewing glasses)
